Buying a climbing rope for the first time could be daunting but once you know the basics, it will be quite easier for you to decide.
Following are the factors you should keep in mind if you are buying the climbing rope for the first time.
- The climbing rope must be between 9.8 and 10.2 millimetres and 60 meters in length.
- It should be UI tested.
- It should be manufactured and designed from a certified and trusted climbing gear manufacturer.
Types Of Ropes
There are two types of ropes:
Dynamic Ropes and Static Ropes.
Static Rope is a rope that stretches little to none when loaded while Dynamic rope has a stretch much like a stiff bungee when a climber takes a fall. A static rope is like steel cable, if there is any floppiness in the system, the climber will come to a very abrupt stop which could be deadly.
When the climber falls on the bungee cord, the stretch in the cord absorbs much of the force created in the fall and the climber comes to a smooth stop.
Hence it is important to note that while climbing you must always use a dynamic rope.
Now, you know that you want a dynamic rope when you go to buy your first climbing rope.
Also, look at the diameter of the rope. The thinner rope is normally a trade-off with the cost and durability. Thinner ropes often cost a little more and are less durable for your first rope.
If you are looking for the perfect rope, the below-mentioned rope could be the best choice. It is a multipurpose rope that can be used in so many ways, both for indoor and outdoor activities.
Rope Length is another choice that you will have to make. In the United States, the current standard in length is sixty meters.
So the Diameter and Length are the two main choices you must make when you are buying a climbing rope.
But there are few other options to look at.
The dry rope is coated to make it waterproof. The coating on the rope helps keep the water from being absorbed by the rope fibres.
When a rope absorbs water, it becomes much weaker because it loses much of its dynamic properties. Dry rope prevents this but does not eliminate the problem. It could be an idea to buy Dry rope but it will cost you thirty to fifty dollars more.
There are again three types of Ropes
Whatever Ropes you chose among the above mentioned, it entirely depends on the type of climbing you do.
Hence the best option is to buy a dynamic rope with nine-point eight millimetres dynamic rope that to ten point two millimetres thick and 60 meters in length. Lastly, it is completely up to you if you want a buy a Dry Rope or not.
